Brands describe a beard wax as the firmer, higher-wax product and a balm as the softer, more conditioning one, and every brand quoted here says wax holds more. Where they part is the scale.
Two scales
The Beard Struggle puts balm at “a medium-strength hold that’s very often enough to tame most beards” and wax at “a strong hold”. Badass Beard Care’s product pages draw the same line one step lower: balm is “soft consistency, light natural hold” and wax is “medium to hard consistency, thicker feel, medium natural hold”, with lanolin added to offset the higher wax content.
So a “medium” on one brand’s balm is a different thing from a “medium” on another brand’s wax. This site prints the word the brand uses and does not convert it. On 3 October 2026, 46 of the 313 balms listed said light (or soft) and 47 said medium.
In between
Honest Amish sells a Heavy Duty balm that it describes as “a middle ground option between a balm and a wax”, with “the holding properties of a light wax”. It is listed apart from the Classic balm because it is a different formula; you can set the two side by side on their head-to-head page.
What to compare instead
Look at the ingredient list, the size of the tin and the price per ounce. Those are on every balm’s page; the hold word is one more fact beside them, not a ranking.

Questions
Does beard wax hold more than beard balm?
Yes, by every brand quoted here. The Beard Struggle says balm "doesn't have the strong hold of beard wax", and Badass Beard Care describes wax as the firmer of the two.
How strong is a balm compared with a wax?
It depends on the brand. The Beard Struggle calls balm medium-strength and wax strong. Badass Beard Care calls its balm light and its wax medium. The same word means different things on two labels.
Is there a balm that holds like a wax?
Honest Amish describes its Heavy Duty balm as a middle ground between a balm and a wax, with "the holding properties of a light wax". It is listed here as its own line, apart from the Classic balm.
Why does this site not rank balms by hold?
Because the hold on a label is the brand's word, not a measurement. We print the word where a brand states one, and nothing where it does not.
