# Is beard balm vegan? What to look for on the label

> Most beard balms are not vegan, because the wax that gives them hold is usually beeswax. A balm is vegan only if nothing in it comes from an animal: no beeswax, no lanolin (from sheep's wool), no tallow (rendered beef fat). Some brands use plant waxes and say so; check the ingredient list, not just the name.
- Why most are not vegan: 275 of the 306 balms here with ingredients on record name beeswax
- Other animal ingredients: Lanolin in 13 balms; tallow in 3
- Plant-wax balms: Candelilla wax in 38 balms; carnauba wax in 4
- Balms their brand calls vegan: 22 on 3 Oct 2026: Bearded Coast (11), Southern Fades (9), BLCK (1), Smooth Viking (1)
- A name is not a list: Two Southern Fades balms sold as "Vegan" have beeswax in the page's own copy or ingredient list; we do not record them as vegan

Whether a balm is vegan comes down to one question: does anything in it come from an animal? The Vegan Society defines veganism, in dietary terms, as "dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals". For a beard balm, three ingredients are the ones to look for.

## The three to look for

- **Beeswax.** The usual wax in a balm: 275 of the 306 balms here with ingredients on record name it. PETA's list of animal-derived ingredients names it, and also cera flava; balm pages write it as, for example, "Cera Alba (Beeswax)".
- **Lanolin.** From the oil glands of sheep, extracted from their wool. 13 balms here list it.
- **Tallow.** Rendered beef fat, the base of a few "tallow balms".

## What a vegan balm uses instead

A plant wax: candelilla most often, sometimes carnauba. 38 of the balms on this site list candelilla wax. The brands that call their balms vegan are, as of 3 October 2026, Bearded Coast, Southern Fades (nine of its eighteen), BLCK and Smooth Viking: 22 balms in all.

## When the name and the list disagree

A "vegan" in the title is a claim by the brand, and the brand's own page can contradict it. Southern Fades sells its balms as "Vegan Beard Balm", but its Sandalwood page lists "Cera Alba (Beeswax)" and its Westerly page says it is blended from "plant butter, select plant oils and beeswax". We show a balm as vegan only where the brand's own copy and ingredient list do not name beeswax, lanolin or tallow, and we say so on the balm's page when they do.

## Questions

**Is beeswax vegan?**
No. Beeswax is made by honeybees, and PETA's list of animal-derived ingredients includes it ("Beeswax. Honeycomb", also listed as cera flava). Balm ingredient lists write it as, for example, "Cera Alba (Beeswax)".

**Is lanolin vegan?**
No. Lanolin is, in PETA's words, "a product of the oil glands of sheep, extracted from their wool".

**Is tallow vegan?**
No. PETA lists tallow as rendered beef fat. A balm that is sold as tallow-based, such as Dalysmooth's tallow face and beard balm, is not vegan.

**What do vegan beard balms use instead of beeswax?**
Plant waxes. Candelilla wax appears in 38 of the balms listed here, and carnauba wax in 4. Southern Fades' Westerly balm, for example, lists candelilla wax where its Sandalwood balm lists Cera Alba (Beeswax).

**How do I check whether a balm is vegan?**
Read the ingredient list for beeswax (written Cera Alba or Cera Flava, often with "beeswax" in brackets), lanolin and tallow. If the brand publishes no list, the name and the badge are all you have, and the two can disagree: Southern Fades' Sandalwood Vegan Beard Balm lists "Cera Alba (Beeswax)".
